Last night we celebrated Leif's birthday. His birthday is actually not until the 24th and it tends to get overshadowed by Christmas so it is nice to acknowledge it earlier like this. Of course it is his 18th, a big milestone in the transition to adulthood and an independent life. This year he had graduated a few weeks ago so the gift also reflected that.
The gifts stated with sweets called Pods although he didn't realize
their significance at that time. Later after dinner there were Birthday
cards. I generally have all family present write in the card in front
of the recipient for family birthdays, it kind of makes the card more
of a ritual. There was a card from his grandparents, and I had found a
card in the shape of an iPod with a vinyl record talking to two iPods
on it's screen. It was a joke about old things and new things. I was
able to write that some old things are still cool like having 18th
birthdays...
The cake was a Boston cake with lots of candles and then the main gifts:
Pablo gave Leif the latest PlayStation2 Grand Theft Auto game. That was very thoughtfull of him.
And then, drum roll made by many hands on the table, Leif started to unwrap his gift from me. Gian, having seen the pattern of the sweets and card pointed out what it would be,but fortunately Leif didn't listen and so was still surprised by the beautiful blue 8 gig iPod Nano.I think he really appreciated it. I was happy to see his joy.
